My name is Dauda Sesay,
I was born in a small town in the northern part of Sierra Leone. At 16, I fled my homeland due to the brutal war that led to the killing of my caring father and my younger sister. I was shot and seriously injured by the rebels. I was admitted and stayed in the refugee camp in the Gambia for about 9 years. During my time at the Camp, I advocate for better living conditions for refugees living at the camp and education for the children. When my injury required further surgery, I moved to the capital, Banjul where I met my wife, Alima also a refugee. Furthermore, due to the continued deterioration of my medical condition, My family and I(including my 6-month old daughter) were resettled to the US by Catholic Charities in May of 2009.
In the United States, I am a community advocate, a husband and caring father to five beautiful children, (2 just got reunited after 16years separation) Upon arrival, I made learning English and acquiring education a top priority for me and my family, and as a result, I earned a degree in Applied Science in Process Technology from Baton Rouge Community College, and currently employed with Dow Chemical
I am the first Refugee Congress Delegate to represent the state of Louisiana at the Refugee Congress. I serve as the Secretary of the Liberian Organization. I am also a founding member and President of Louisiana Organization for Refugees and Immigrants (LORI) a nonprofit community-based leadership organization assisting immigrants with integration into the United States.
I am also a member of Mayor Broome International Relations Commission and Chairperson of the commission Culture and Art Engagement.
