Service Member of the Month Spotlight: Sean McDonald

Posted By Amy Cimo, Emersyn Consulting, Friday, January 18, 2019

As one of Forum 35’s core pillars, Service is important to us. We’re dedicated to giving back and improving Baton Rouge through service projects and volunteer opportunities. Each month, we feature an actively involved Service Committee member who goes above and beyond and is committed to making a larger impact on our community.

This month we talked with Sean McDonald of Bayview Asset Management. Sean is no stranger to Forum 35 and has been a member for several years. We asked Sean to tell us a bit more about his background and connections with Forum 35. Read more to find out why he’s stuck around so long!

How long have you been a member of Forum 35?

I’ve been involved off and on since 2007

How did you hear about Forum?

I heard of Forum 35 for the first time while at LSU. I was in Circle K (the college level of Kiwanis) and we were working the concession stand and Santa photos at Capital City Kiwanis's Winter Wonderland display in Repentance Park. Some of the original members of Forum 35 were out there working the concessions with us.

Why did you choose to get involved with the Forum 35 Service Committee?

I 've been involved in different service efforts and groups going back to elementary school, so it was a natural fit for me. Also, one of the then co-chairs, Angelle David, had encouraged me to get active in Forum, so it was a good place to start.

What has been your favorite thing about Forum 35 since joining?

All the successes we've had over the years with Art Melt. After serving as Service Co-Chair in 2010 and 2011, which meant I got to handle volunteer coordination for Art Melt, I served for 2 years as VP of Projects. Art Melt was our largest project, so it became a major focus area for me. Then I ended up chairing Art Melt in 2014.

Where is your hometown and how did you end up in Baton Rouge?

I claim most of the East Bank of Jefferson Parish, but mainly River Ridge and Kenner. I came to Baton Rouge in 1998 to go to LSU and at graduation got hired to be a commercial real estate appraiser at Cook, Moore, Davenport and Associates, where I stayed for almost 15 years.

What's your favorite thing about Baton Rouge?

I love the growth and redevelopment I've gotten to witness over the last 20 years and the continuing development energy especially in Mid City.

Tell us a little about your profession and what you do.

I have the great joy of working in an office in my backyard as a Sr. Commercial Real Estate Analyst for Bayview Asset Management, an investment management firm based in south Florida that focuses on mortgage investments and loan servicing. I'm part of the commercial real estate valuation team that does analysis on properties across the country for the company's investment decisions, and I have recently started to take on a heavier focus on hotel valuations.

Do you have any hobbies?

I started riding a bicycle again now that I live in Mid City, and I have season tickets to LSU football and basketball. That keeps me busy a good bit of the year. I'm trying to travel more and am eyeing Australia and the Great Barrier Reef for later this year. I've also been an active member of Cortana Kiwanis since 2007, and that keeps me busy with additional projects focused on service to children.

What are you most looking forward to while being a part of Forum 35 and the Service Committee?

I hope to continue to find new service opportunities to improve life in Baton Rouge.
