November Service Member of the Month Spotlight: Francesca Messina

Posted By Amy Cimo, Emersyn Consulting, Wednesday, November 7, 2018

As one of Forum 35’s core pillars, Service is important to us. We’re dedicated to giving back and improving Baton Rouge through service projects and volunteer opportunities. Each month, we feature an actively involved Service Committee member who goes above and beyond and is committed to making a larger impact on our community.

This month we’re so happy to introduce Francesca Messina, Research Scientist at The Water Institute. Francesca had been a member of Forum 35 for a while and wanted to be more involved, so she found her place within the Service Committee and hasn’t stopped since! We love Francesca’s energy and are thrilled to have her on board. Learn more about Francesca below.

How long have you been a member of Forum 35, and how did you hear about the organization?

I’ve been a member for a few years. I learned about Forum 35 at work from my colleagues.

Why did you choose to get involved with the Forum 35 Service committee?

I like the opportunity to meet new people and other young professionals. I am always looking for new friends and I like volunteering and doing something that can be helpful for the community where I live.

What has been your favorite thing about Forum/Service since jumping in?

I have enjoyed the opportunities to volunteer and do a lot of different activities (i.e., cleaning the lakes, packing books for the kids during the A Box of Knowledge event, etc.). All the activities are very well organized! I like the monthly socials, too!

Where is your hometown and how did you end up in Baton Rouge?

I am Italian. I was born in northeast Italy, in Trieste. I grew up in Torino, in the northwest. I moved to Baton Rouge after my PhD three years ago. I accepted a Post Doctoral position at the Water Institute of the Gulf, a not-for-profit organization where I currently work as a Research Scientist.

What's your favorite thing about Baton Rouge?

The people are very friendly and make me feel at home. I love the warmer fall and winter weather. I also love the sunset on the Mississippi River!

Tell us a little about your profession and what you do.

I work as a Research Scientist at The Water Institute, a not-for-profit independent applied research and technical services institution with a mission to help coastal and deltaic communities. I am part of the Numerical Modelling Team. We mainly perform numerical simulations to understand the complex dynamics of riverine, coastal, and deltaic systems.

Do you have any hobbies?

I am a gym-addicted person. I always workout after work. I also like any outdoor activity and swimming. I love to cook and bake.

What are you most looking forward to while being a part of the Service Committee?

I want to help Baton Rouge to be a fun place and help young professionals in Baton Rouge to meet each other.
