Service Member of the Month Spotlight: KoKo Sims

Posted By Amy Cimo, Emersyn Consulting, Wednesday, October 17, 2018

As one of Forum 35’s core pillars, Service is important to us. We’re dedicated to giving back and improving Baton Rouge through service projects and volunteer opportunities. Each month, we feature an actively involved Service Committee member who goes above and beyond and is committed to making a larger impact on our community.

This month we’re so happy to introduce Juaquita “KoKo” Sims, Principal of Celerity Crestworth Charter School. KoKo found Forum 35 through the Public Education Project. She has since joined the Service Committee for personal volunteer opportunities and as a way to help her students give back to the community. We are thrilled to have KoKo and all of her students helping out with Service! Keep reading to learn more about KoKo.

How did you hear about Forum 35?

I heard about Forum 35 when my charter school applied for this year's PEP grant.

Why did you choose to get involved with the Forum 35 Service committee?

I chose to get involved because I was impressed with the service work being done for schools and wanted to join that effort. I also have been a member of a service sorority for 12 years and Forum 35 falls in direct alignment with our mission.

What has been your favorite thing about Forum and Service since jumping in?

My favorite thing has been networking with other business leaders in Baton Rouge and expanding my personal knowledge base about the community

Where is your hometown?

I was born and raised in the great city of Atlanta, Georgia. I've been in Baton Rouge since January 2016.

What's your favorite thing about Baton Rouge?

My favorite thing about Baton Rouge is the sense of community. I've called BR a "mini Atlanta" because there are lots of things to do and get involved in but it's still small enough to feel very much part of the community.

Tell us a little about your profession and what you do.

I have been a public school educator since 2004. I started my career as an 8th grade math teacher and loved every minute spent in the classroom. I currently serve as Principal of Celerity Crestworth Charter School in north Baton Rouge. In this role, I pride myself on building solid relationships with students and making a lasting impact on their lives.

Do you have any hobbies?

Sure, my hobbies include reading, watching investigative documentaries, bike riding, and traveling.

What are you most looking forward to while being a part of the Service Committee?

I'm looking forward to getting more involved in the Baton Rouge community, specifically with the K-12 education community. I look forward to more service projects that serve schools and students.
